Situated close to Eltham Palace and alongside the Grade II listed remnants of a Tudor brick-built summerhouse and wall, the challenge was to create a distinctive design that clearly announced the presence of the school, whilst sitting the building comfortably within its historic surroundings.
Inspired by the historic remains, the architects used contrasting brick types in a style that makes reference to the pattern of Tudor era windows. The interlocking diamond pattern has been created using smooth orange/red, textured red and blue/black bricks, and wraps around the building as a consistent surface, punctuated only by the large classroom windows that punch into the pattern at intervals to suit the internal plan. The result is an eye-catching and very distinctive building that fully meets all of the design challenges.
