New Pavilion, Old Trafford Cricket Ground

All Case Studies

To transform the iconic cricket venue by restoration of the distinctive 1895 building façade and addition of a new, sensitively designed, state-of-the-art, Pavillion building that preserves and enhances the unique heritage of the original design.

The new steel-framed red brick and glass extension, respectfully stepped back from the existing pitch-side frontage, is framed by imposing stair tower structures in metric Chester Red Blend with contrasting terracotta coloured mortar and raked horizontal joints. Distinctive corner detailing in special radiused bricks echoes the form of other building elements at the ground. The original building has been carefully restored using Chester Red Blend bricks in imperial format, in combination with sandstone banding and natural coloured flush-pointed narrow-bed mortar joints, to recreate the old pitch side frontage. Stack bonded smooth black brickwork has been used to create vertical ‘slots’ and brick ‘fins’ above the spectator concourse and to either side of the double height reception space, helping to articulate the separation between old and new.
