Challenge

To create a distinctive and futuristic building for use as an artist’s studio and workspace.

Solution

Pure white glazed bricks were chosen to protect the structure and define its function. With external wall design dictating an outer leaf of just ½-brick width and the client demanding high quality finishing and detailing, Ibstock worked closely with the architect to provide special glazed bricks to unusually tight dimensional and colour tolerances. To produce the desired aesthetic, 4mm joints were used, rather than the standard 10mm, and all stretcher bricks manufactured in ‘pistol’ format with 12mm bed joints at rear to accommodate wall ties. A combination of formats, including special angled bricks at the ‘sharp’ end of the building, precast copings, glazed headers for corners and jambs, and bricks in a range of special sizes were supplied to achieve the stunning, minimalistic and austere visual.
